A first-class vehicle

There are very few things more inextricably linked to a safari in Africa than the classic Land Rover Defender. When you see one, dusty African bush landscapes or vast velds are immediately conjured in your mind’s eye. Grasping the steering wheel between your hands, you almost feel as if your eyes should be focusing on looking out for the slightest of movement that could indicate the presence of game. It is not just Defender enthusiasts who almost automatically associate this very special vehicle with adventure. London-based gunmakers John Rigby & Co. also have similar historical connections with the romance of the African safari. It is thanks to legendary hunters and Rigby customers such as W.D.M. Bell, Jim Corbett, Denys Finch Hatton and Henry Selby that the brand has become synonymous with the challenging hunt in the wilderness and the adventure this entails.

With the intention of celebrating and honouring these connections and the brand’s fascinating heritage, Rigby, Kingsmen Editions Ltd and Traditional English Guncases (TEG) struck up a partnership. Together they wanted to create something that allowed Rigby fans to enjoy their own slice of the grandeur of going on safari, no matter where they were.

Through their joint passion for quality, adventure and traditional British design, the three brands have created a vehicle that is both beautiful and functional. “Just like our weapons,” says Marc Newton, Managing Director of Rigby. Within six months, the independent vehicle enhancement company Kingsmen Editions trans-formed a classic Defender 130 into every hunter’s dream. This included practical features such as access to 25 litres of pressurised water, which could be used for field dressing or to clean equipment. And a 270° pull-out awning, perfect for alfresco lunch or for protection from the sun or rain.
If you are so inclined, you could also commission your very own bespoke Rigby Land Rover. The first orders have already gone in. “Each vehicle will be unique,” promises Marc Newton.
