The question of whether he would follow in his father’s footsteps never came up. Stefano Pedretti always knew that he too would become an engraver. At the age of 15, the Italian attended a school of arts, then completed his military service and began engraving with his father at 19. “I worked with a hammer and chisel for one single year,” says Stefano Pedretti, “then I focused on bulino engraving.” That was 33 years ago. Today he’s one of the world’s most famous engravers, not least because of his expertise in bulino-style engraving. Bulino is the Italian word for burin, a very sharp engraving tool. It can place very fine lines and dots extremely close together – often up to a thousand per square millimetre. This rather pointillist engraving style creates special light and shade effects on the metal surface. This is what makes the images extraordinarily detailed and almost photo-like. “Using a microscope means I can add even more dimensions and rich detail to the depicted scenes,” explains Stefano Pedretti.

Master of detail
An excellent eye, artistic instinct and passion for detail are needed for an engraving to become a genuine work of art. Stefano Pedretti possesses these qualities and is also a keen hunter. This combination has made him one of the world’s most sought-after master engravers. And he has once again created a highlight for Blaser with the R8 African Continent.
The master engraver has proven his masterful skill with the extraordinary portrayal of big game on the R8 African Continent. The warm yellow of the solid gold background emphasises the sensational mood created by the light. On the locking housing and on the base, curvy arabesques and delicate gold inlays create exciting synergies contrasted by the traditional bluing. This gun’s exquisite frame consists of the highly polished barrel and the stock’s elegant wood grade 11 walnut burr. You get a sense that, even after all these years, Stefano Pedretti passionately creates amazing works of art every time.
